Homesteading isn’t just for those of us in a rural environment. Urban Homesteading is a fast growing trend encouraging homeowners in urban environments to adopt self-sustainable practices.
The term “Urban Homesteading” originally referred to policies encouraging urban development by selling vacant properties in need of rehabilitation to homesteaders for prices as low as 1$. Although a few programs like this still exist, the term has expanded to refer to urban homes seeking partial or total self-sufficiency.
Urban Homesteaders are innovators who develop techniques for sustainability that don’t require much space. An Urban Homesteader might use vertical gardens to grow tons of food in a small space, or turn their lawn into an herb garden.
